National Adoption Day 2024

Nov 19, 2024

National Adoption Month is observed each November and is dedicated to celebrating the adoptions of the children in CPS care across the nation. Each year, Child Protection Courts in Midland, Odessa, San Angelo, and nearby cities hold adoption ceremonies open to the public. These ceremonies are so widely attended that they are often held in local churches and large meeting spaces. These events create memorable moments with balloons, certificates, and family photos, offering families a unique and joyful way to mark the day when they became “forever families.” This year, a total of 12 children were adopted by 10 families in Midland, 8 children by 7 families in Odessa, and 13 children by 9 families in San Angelo.

West Texas has a deep-rooted tradition of community support and hospitality, and National Adoption Day highlights this spirit by focusing on children who need stability and love. Currently, over 6,000 children in Texas foster care are awaiting adoption. By celebrating National Adoption Day locally, West Texas families not only build awareness around the need for adoption but also encourage more community members to consider becoming foster or adoptive parents.

In West Texas, our local programs Heart Gallery of West Texas and The Attic Resource Center both recruit and support adoptive families, respectively. Our collaborative effort, West Texas Together, functions year-round to provide support, advocate for better outcomes in foster care, and connect waiting children with adoptive families. National Adoption Day is a time to reflect on their progress and inspire others to join the mission, knowing that every child deserves a family. Through this day of celebration and awareness, West Texans are reminded of the impact they can make in the lives of children by providing a home, a community, and the opportunity for a brighter future.
