National Foster Care Month Reflection from One Accord for Kids
May is National Foster Care Month—a time to honor the many individuals who step into the lives of children and families in crisis with courage, compassion, and commitment. At One Accord for Kids, we believe that foster care is not just about providing a safe place for a child—it’s about joining a team of people working toward healing, restoration, and hope for struggling families.
Foster parents play a unique and essential role in this process. They are not replacements for biological parents; they are temporary teammates in the hard, holy work of family preservation and reunification. When a child is removed from their home, foster parents offer stability and nurture. But even more than that, they become part of a larger support system—alongside caseworkers, therapists, church communities, and biological family members—working toward the goal of helping families heal so they can thrive.
Here in our 30-county West Texas region, we face a heartbreaking reality: over 60% of children who come into foster care are moved out of the area. That means they are not only removed from their homes, but also from their schools, friends, churches, and everything familiar. The trauma of removal is compounded by the loss of connection to their own community.
This is why we need more foster parents—especially local foster parents. When foster families open their homes in the communities where children already live, those children can stay connected to their schools, their culture, and their sense of belonging. That connection is vital, not only for the child’s well-being, but also for the possibility of family reunification. Healing happens faster and more completely when kids stay close.
Being a foster parent isn’t easy—but it’s one of the most palpable ways to live out love. And you don’t do it alone. The Attic Resource Center is here to help, and so are the churches, professionals, and volunteers who believe that there is a loving local home for every child in West Texas.
This National Foster Care Month, would you consider becoming a part of this healing team? Become a monthly donor to help support The Attic Resource Center. The need is great—but so is the opportunity to make a lasting difference.
